A Continued Effort to Understand Pop Culture

So I'm driving home from work and I'm switching out my DJ Elliott cd for MDFMK (not KMFDM, but pretty close). I catch a bit of radio in between and hear the beginning of Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl," which I ended up listening to in its entirety by choice.

Dang! That song is catchy! I'm so embarrassed. And surprised. She says "shit" like 100 times and the radio edit does very little to cover it up. I guess that's what the kids are into these days.

Despite its catchiness and overuse of one of my favorite swear words, the song is not without great flaws. If you listen to the lyrics of the song, she's totally contradicting herself. She's singing about how some girl messed with her shit and she doesn't like it, so she's gonna meet her out by the bleachers and kick her ass. So although she claims that she "ain't no hollerback girl," she is actually the paragon for hollerback girls, as she is singing a song in response to the girl who was messing with her.

She also rips off a line from an M.I.A. song. Way to holler!
